GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 5

Pablo Vitti scored twice against Panionios leading his side to a 1-2 victory in Nea Smyrni and Veria’s first 3 points of the season. Panionios was extremely poor in today’s encounter and was handed their first defeat of the season. Both of Vitti’s goals came in the first half and N’Gog scored a late goal for Panionios.
Veria sent their first warning in the 12th minute with Kapetanos’ shot and 4 minutes later Vitti’s excellent, well-placed header from Arce’s corner left no chance for Gianniotis, giving Veria the surprising 0-1 lead. Panionios was unable to respond to the goal as Veria continued to look more of a threat. Panionios created their first chances of the match late in the first half through Ansarifard but it was Veria who doubled their lead before the break. A poor defensive effort from Ben allowed Navalovski to enter the penalty area, playing a ball to Vitti, who made it 0-2 with his left-footed shot. The visitors took their comfortable 0-2 lead into halftime.
Panionios came out in the second half looking for an early goal to get back into the game. The hosts created chances with N’Gog (51st) and Risvanis (53rd) but Lopez denied both players and Ben’s attempt in the 59th minute did not find the target. With Panionios unable to find a goal in their 15 minutes of heavy pressure, Veria held onto their two goal lead until the 81st minute when N’Gog’s header found the back of the net from Shojaei’s corner. The goal put Panionios back into the game, but Veria was able to hold on in the final 10 minutes for their first victory of the season.
Due to Veria’s poor start to the season, the club decided to sack coach Alekos Vosniadis yesterday. The club announced that their new manager will be Thomas Grafas.
Today’s win gives Veria their first points in the SuperLeague as Panionios drops points for the first time this year. Panionios will hope to bounce back next week away to Iraklis while Veria will look to continue their momentum before they host PAOK in matchday 6.
