- Atromitos Keeps Asteras Pointless -
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 5
|Atromitos||1 - 0||Asteras Tripolis|
Atromitos was the big winner in a battle between two sides with zero points, defeating Asteras Tripolis 1-0 at the Peristeri Stadium. The only goal of the game came late in the first half with a great effort from Umbides.
Atromitos began the game as the stronger side, but as the half progressed Asteras Tripolis began to control the pace of the game. After Harbunow denied the visitors the opening goal, Atromitos found the breakthrough against the run of play. A great string of passes set up Umbides, whose impressive shot beat Kosicky to give Atromitos the lead late in the first half.
Asteras Tripolis entered the second half looking for a quick equalizer and created chances through Mazza and Ioannidis, without finding the back of the net. As the minutes progressed, Atromitos began to look more comfortable in defending their lead and in the 76th minute Asteras was left with 10 men after Iglesias was sent off with a second yellow. The man disadvantage prevented Asteras from threatening the hosts in the final minutes and Atromitos held onto their 1-0 victory and their first three points of the season.
After today's result, Asteras remains the only team in the Greek SuperLeague with zero points. Makis Chavos’ position as manager will be in question after yet another loss for the Arkades. Atromitos, who is still looking for Traianos Dellas’ replacement, earned their first victory of the season and will hope to continue the momentum when they travel to Xanthi next week. Asteras Tripolis’ schedule does not get any easier as they play in Athens against Panathinaikos for Matchday 6.
