GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 5
|Larissa||1 - 0||Olympiacos|
Nikos Golias found the back of the net for Larissa in stoppage time to hand Olympiacos their first defeat of the season. The hosts took advantage of an extremely poor Olympiacos side that did not threaten throughout the 90 minutes of play. Today’s victory is Larissa’s first of the season.
Paulo Bento displayed Olympiacos in a 4-4-2 formation (again no Fortounis) without an offensive midfielder, something that was clearly missing in the visitor’s attack. Despite having both Ideye and Cardozo in the starting XI both made little impact on the game. The first and only real chance of the half fell to Larissa when Anastasopoulos’ shot was saved off the line by Cambiasso (the best player for Olympiacos in the opening 45 minutes). The pace of the half was fast but neither team created chances and the score remained goalless at the break.
Like the first half, the pace of the game was high while neither team was able to create the opportunity to find the breakthrough. Olympiacos continued their problematic performance on the attack and Paulo Bento decided to sub on Fortounis for the first time this season. The 23-year old attempted to create something for the Olympiacos offense, but it proved ineffective. With the match heading for a goalless draw, Larissa stole all three points in the second minute of stoppage time when Golias’ shot deflected off Milivojevic and ended up into the back of the net. The goal “set fire” to the AEL FC Arena as the fans, players, and coaching staff celebrated a historic victory.
Today’s win is Larissa’s first of the season along with Olympiacos’ first defeat in the League. Larissa sit on 4 points while Olympiacos failed to take advantage of PAOK and Panathinaikos’ draws and they now sit one point behind their rivals on 6 points. After their mid-week encounter with APOEL for the Europa League, Olympiacos will hope (and need) for all 3 points in the first derby of the season against AEK at the Karaiskaki Stadium. In matchday 6, Larissa will travel to Levadiakos.
