- Tough Loss in Portugal for Greece U-21 -
UEFA EURO 2017 QUALIFYING - GROUP STAGE
|Portugal U21||1 - 0||Greece|
The Greek U-21 National Team was defeated 1-0 in Portugal for the 8th matchday of Euro 2017 Qualifying. The Ethniki Elpidon put on a good performance against the group leaders and will feel unlucky to not come away with a draw.
The Greek U-21 National Team had a tough task ahead of them knowing that they needed a win against the group leaders Portugal to stay alive for a place at the Euro 2017 Final Tournament. Greece played well in the opening 45 minutes, but the better chances fell to the hosts. Orta’s shot was cleared off the line in the 18th minute and Fernandes’ free-kick barely missed the target in the 32nd minute
Portugal found the opening goal 7 minutes into the second half off of a rebound effort (that was created from a corner) was put into Barkas’ net by Martins. Greece came close to an equalizer but Mystakidis’ thunderous strike came off of the crossbar. In the final 15 minutes, Greece dominated the game as they looked for the tying goal, however Portugal held onto their 1-0 victory to earn their 7th win from 8 matches.
After losing 0-4 in Greece against Portugal earlier in qualifying, Greece will look at today’s performance as a missed opportunity to earn a point against the group leaders. Greece continues to sit in 5th place, only ahead of Liechtenstein, with 2 games remaining. Second place will now seem an extremely difficult task while a top 4 finish among 2nd placed teams will be nearly impossible for the Ethniki Elpidon (leads to a playoff spot). In October, Greece will travel to Israel and host Hungary with hopes of two wins and a possible “final” chance for second in the group.
