Panathinaikos avoided the upset as they came through with a 92-81 win in overtime against Anadolu Efes. James sent the game to the extra period with four seconds remaining before the Trifylli dominated their opponents in overtime.
A strong first quarter from Gentile gave Panathinaikos and early lead as they went into halftime ahead 38-32. The hosts led for most of the game, however late in the fourth quarter Efes scored clutch points to find themselves in front.
A match that was in Panathinaikos’ control seemed to be lost, however with four seconds remaining and the Prasini trailing 67-70, James was fouled from behind the arc sending him to the free-throw line for three shots. The American kept his composure, scoring all three free throws and sent the game to overtime.
The hosts had the momentum (and home support) and dominated the extra period by outscoring their opponents 22-12. Rivers and Gabriel added eight and seven points in overtime as Panathinaikos came away with an important 92-81 victory.
Rivers led Panathinaikos with 22-points (8 in overtime) while Gentile scored 15-points. The hero at the end, James, finished the game with 14 points along with Bourousis. Gabriel was fantastic in overtime and added 10 points to Panathinaikos’ total.
The win brings Panathinaikos’ record to 10-7 before their big match next weekend against Fenerbahce in Turkey. Both teams sit tied in the standings as they both look to claim fourth place by the end of the season, which leads to homecourt advantage in the playoffs. Efes moves down to 8-9.
