-- THE BALL PUNISHES --
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 2
|PAOK||0 - 1||PAS Giannina|
It was a frustrating night for PAOK as they fell to PAS Giannina 0-1 at the Toumba Stadium. The hosts wasted NUMEROUS chances to walk away with a comfortable victory but their lack of composure in front of goal along with Paschalakis’ heroics in front of the net led to the disappointing result. Tzimopoulos punished the Dikefalos tou Vora with his first half goal to give PAS Giannina all three points.
PAOK’s pressure began as early as the first minute with Koulouris’ double chance in front of goal that was denied by Paschalakis. Against the run of play, PAS Giannina was able to find the opener when Koulouris’ poor clearance from a corner set up Tzimopoulos, who gave PAS Giannina the 0-1 lead in the 16th minute.
The hosts pressed on for a quick equalizer but Paschalakis came up with great saves to deny Campos (19’) and on two occasions Pelkas (26’, 31’) to keep his side ahead. In one of PAOK’s biggest chances of the match, Pelkas drove the ball across the goal line, however neither Campos (on the goal line) nor Koulouris could turn the ball into the back of the net.
The second half was a continuation of the first half as PAOK dominated the possession and the chances on goal. Pelkas missed multiple opportunities to pull PAOK level in the early minutes after the restart with the score remaining in favor of the visitors. In the final 15 minutes, PAOK continued to waste their opportunities as Athanasiadis’ unmarked shot from inside the penalty area was denied by heroic defending from Michael in the 85th minute and in stoppage time, Leo Matos’ free header went over the bar. The final whistle saw PAOK lose a game that could have easily gone in their favor with a large margin of victory.
The continuous goal scoring problems for PAOK now leave them 7th in the standings with 20 points while PAS Giannina jump into 4th, along with Panionios on 22 points.
