Panathinaikos came away with a big victory in Monday’s derby at the Stadio Erinis kai Filias, defeating Olympiacos 67-77 to advance to the Greek Basketball Cup Final. It was Panathinaikos’ first win over Olympiacos this season (third straight in the Greek Cup) as they now await Aris in the Cup Final on February 19th.
After three wins from three games against Panathinaikos in the Greek Basket League and Euroleague, Olympiacos hosted their eternal rivals in the Greek Basketball Cup semifinal.
Unlike their previous outings it was the Prasini who controlled the game in the 40 minutes of play. Olympiacos struggled offensively and Panathinaikos began to pull away in the second half, increasing their lead to double digits in the fourth quarter. In the end, the visitors celebrated a comfortable 67-77 victory, defeating Olympiacos for a third straight season in the Greek Basketball Cup.
The MVP of the game was K.C. Rivers, finishing with 27-points. Gabriel (last minute addition) added 14 points while Calathes and Singleton each scored 11-points. Mantzaris was the leading scorer for Olympiacos with 16-points and Printezis finished with 13-points.
Panathinaikos will now face Aris (defeated AEK on Saturday) in the Cup Final on February 19th. The Prasini will be the clear favorites to lift the trophy for the sixth consecutive season and for the 18th time in the club’s history.
