-- JIMENEZ DIGS UP THE REAL AEK --
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 17
|AEK||2 - 0||Asteras Tripolis|
New AEK boss Manolo Jimenez celebrated a victory in his first game in the dugout since taking the helm for a second spell in charge of the Kitrinomavri, who ran out comfortable 2-0 winners against Asteras Tripolis in their Matchday 17 clash on Sunday.
Czech Republic forward Tomáš Pekhart headed AEK ahead in the 24th minute in front of an expectant crowd at the Olympic Stadium, who had not seen their team pick up three points since a 4-0 home win over Levadiakos on December 10.
The goal settled any early nerves the AEK players had, allowing the team to produce some positive attacking play, with Tripolis fortunate to go in only one goal down at half-time as the hosts peppered their goal with shots.
The home fans did not have long to wait for a second goal, however, with Greece international and club captain Petros Mantalos firing home from the edge of the box to seal the points and a win which moved AEK up to fifth spot with 25 points from 17 matches.
Jimenez, who took over from José Morais after the latter’s resignation in the wake of their poor 3-2 defeat at Panaitolikos in midweek, will have been pleased by the reaction of the players as he looks to guide them back to the upper echelons of the SuperLeague table.
