He might not be at the NBA All-Star game next month, but Giannis Bourousis will lead Panathinaikos to the Euroleague playoffs. The Trifylli defeated Barcelona 71-65 in Greece to increase their record to 11-8, giving them an almost sure place in the playoffs.
With Giannis Bourousis putting on the best performance of the season, Panathinaikos defeated Barcelona 71-65 in the 19th round of the Euroleague regular season. The Trifylli were in front for most of the game, and despite a small scare in the fourth quarter, came away with an important victory.
Bourousis was the MVP of the night as he dominated both ends of the court and finished with a double-double, 14 points and 11 rebounds. Rivers (13 points), James (10 points), and Singleton (13 points) also scored double digit points for the Prasini. Both Calathes and new signing Gentile were on off nights.
The win not only moves Panathinaikos’ record to 11-8 for the season, but it also gives them complete control of a spot in the Euroleague playoffs. The Greek Cup Champions can now focus on obtaining fourth place by the end of the season, which leads to home court advantage in the playoffs. Barcelona finished the game with 21 turnovers as they continue their disappointing season with their 8-11 record. Barcelona are 9th in the standings and can still contest a spot in the playoffs.
Panathinaikos’ next game will be on Thursday in Belgrade against Crvena Zvezda.
