-- Panthires Held Up in Tripoli --
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 18
|Asteras Tripolis||1 - 1||Panionios|
|Mazza (p) 44'||Tapolo 47'|
Panionios lost ground in their pursuit of runaway SuperLeague leaders Olympiakos on Saturday as the Nea Smyrni side were held to a 1-1 draw by Asteras Tripolis.
The frustrating result leaves Vladan Milojevic’s Panionios 10 points adrift of the Erythrolefki, who are in action on Sunday at Veria, while Asteras remain unmoved in 10th place in the standings.
Both teams were in attacking mood in an entertaining Matchday 18 encounter at the Theodoros Kolokotronis Stadium, with Asteras first to aim a shot on goal in the 11th minute but Michalis Manias’ strike cannoned off the right post.
Panionios responded with a period of heavy pressure on the home goal but just when it seemed they might grab the lead, defender Valentinos Vlachos was penalised for a handball and Tripolis went 1-0 up a minute before half-time as Pablo Mazza dispatched the spot-kick.
The Panthers responded immediately when substitute Kevin Tapoko netted from close range just a minute after coming on following the half-time break.
The visitors then enjoyed a purple patch and should have gone better with chances from Giorgos Masouras and Takis Fountas, who went close to scoring in quick succession.
Panionios were grateful for the point in the end, however, as Asteras forward Nikos Kaltsas steered Kostas Giannoulis’ cross just inches wide late on for the hosts.
