GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 18
|Panathinaikos||0 - 0||Levadiakos|
Panathinaikos missed out on the chance to move up to second spot in the SuperLeague on Sunday after an abject performance saw the Greens stutter to a goalless draw against lowly Levadiakos.
The Matchday 18 contest at the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium was a stark reminder for the Trifylli’s suffering supporters that their team has a long way to go if it is to seriously challenge the dominance of eternal rivals Olympiacos.
Marinos Ouzounidis’ team struggled to create any noteworthy scoring chances in a lifeless display against a team with the league’s worst away record. The highlight of the game was a 66th-minute header from Sweden striker Marcus Berg which went wide of the goal.
Chances were also at a premium for the visitors, but Panathinaikos old boy Vangelis Mantzios almost embarrassed his former club even further in the 72nd minute. However, the home fans breathed a collective sigh of relief after the 33-year-old frontman’s shot was saved well by goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos.
The result leaves Panathinaikos down in fourth spot with 31 points from their 18 matches and with an 11-point gap between themselves and runaway leaders Olympiakos. Levadiakos will be more than pleased with the result as the point pulls them out of the drop zone.
