Platanias’ run in the Greek Cup will continue after their 1-2 comeback victory in overtime against PAS Giannina. The Epirotes brought the scores level on aggregate (1-1) with a late second half goal, but in the second extra period two goals from the visitors sent them to the quarterfinals of the competition.
It was an eventful match at the Zosimades Stadium where PAS Giannina hosted Platanias in their second leg fixture for the Greek Cup Round of 16. The visitors had a small 1-0 lead from their first leg win in Crete.
After a goalless first half, PAS Giannina came out the stronger side in the second half however in the 65th minute, Berios was sent off for the hosts after his handball in front of an open net prevented Platanias from finding the opener. From the spot, Manousos’ shot hit the post as the scores remained goalless.
Six minutes from time, the stadium erupted when Jairo was played in on goal with a brilliant backheel pass as he made no mistake from close range to bring the scores level on aggregate and send the game to extra time.
In overtime, the match seemed to head for penalties as the score remained 1-0 on the night and level on aggregate. However with the man advantage, it was the visitors who found the all-important away goal when Platanias were awarded their second penalty on the night with Llorente calmly converting from the spot to re-give Platanias the lead on aggregate (1-2).
PAS Giannina now needed two goals to have hopes to qualify for the next round, but in the end Platanias added a second goal when Manousos redeemed himself when his powerful shot from outside the penalty area found the back of the net.
Platanias won 1-3 on aggregate (1-2 on the night) and will now face AEK in the quarterfinals of the competition.
