Olympiacos broke the Greek hoodoo against Turkish side’s with a historic 3-0 win in Ankara in the second leg of their Europa League Round of 32 tie on Thursday to secure a place in the last 16 in sensational style.
Paul Bento’s team, who were held to a goalless draw at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in last week’s first leg, became the first Greek side to win on Turkish soil in European competition courtesy of a double from Karim Ansarifard and a goal from Tarik Elyounoussi.
Before Thursday’s heroics by Olympiacos, Turkish teams had won six of previous home meetings with Greek clubs, with four more matches drawn, while it is the first time the Erythrolefki have progressed to the last 16 of the competition since 2011/12 season.
And the reigning Greek champions are well worth their place in this Friday’s draw at UEFA’s HQ in Nyon, putting in a much improved display compared to their efforts in the home leg in Athens.
After a tightly-contested first half, Olympiacos grabbed the breakthrough with their first effort on target when Spanish defender Alberto defender Botía guided Sebá's corner to the unmarked Ansarifard at the far post with the No17 prodding home past home keeper Zydrunas Karčemarskas.
The Red and Whites went 2-0 up in the 70th minute when Androutsos created the opening with a fine dribble before delivering a cross for the unmarked Elyounoussi to nod into the empty net.
Ansarifard then put the icing on the cake for the visitors, heading in his second on the rebound after Karčemarskas had denied Seba with four minutes left to cap a man-of-the-match display.
Olympiacos will find out their opponent in the next round tomorrow at 7:00 AM (EST).
