Olympiacos’ Path to Quarterfinals Passes Through Turkey

Just like the Round of 32, Olympiacos will face a Turkish side in the UEFA Europa League Round of 16. The Erythrolefki were paired with Besiktas in today’s draw.

It will be another Greek-Turkish battle in the UEFA Europa League after today’s draw paired Olympiacos and Besiktas in the Round of 16. It was not the most favorable draw for the Greek Champions, however some big names were avoided such as Manchester United, Lyon, and Roma.

On paper, the two legged tie looks to be an even battle between the two teams as they both currently lead their respective domestic leagues. Besiktas finished third in their Champions League group to continue to the Europa League knockout stages where they were eliminated Israeli club Hapoel Be’er Sheva, who eliminated Olympiacos in Champions League qualifying in July. Besiktas defeated Hapoel Be’er Sheva in both legs, 1-3 in Israel and 2-1 in Turkey.

The first leg will be played in Greece on March 9th and the return leg will be held in Turkey on March 16th.

Earlier this season Olympiacos faced Besiktas in a pre-season friendly where the Turks were victorious 0-1.

In the draw results, Lyon/Roma will be the most anticipated matchup in the Round of 16 while there will be two domestic battles as Schalke/Borussia Monchengladbach and Gent/Genk were paired with each other. Cypriot Champions, APOEL, were handed a favorable opponent and will face Anderlecht.

  • Olympiacos - Besiktas
  • APOEL - Anderlecht
  • Celta - Krasnodar
