GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 22
|Iraklis||1 - 1||PAOK|
|Bastakos 80'||Prijovic 19'|
PAOK were denied victory by Michalis Bastakos’ late equaliser for Iraklis in Sunday’s Thessaloniki derby at the Kaftanzoglio stadium as the visitors’ hangover from their mid-week Europa League exit saw them put in a below-bar display against their city rivals. Iraklis preserved their 19-year unbeaten run when hosting PAOK.
Vladan Ivic’s men, who earned a creditable 1-1 draw at Schalke onThursday but eventually went out of the Round of 32 to the Germans 4-1 on aggregate, looked to be on their way to victory in this SuperLeague Matchday 22 showdown following Swiss striker Aleksandar Prijovic’s 19th-minute opening goal.
There were suspicions of offside for Prijovic’s strike, and replays suggested that the referee was wrong in letting the goal stand. The visitors failed to build on their good fortune, however, passing up numerous chances to extend their lead and put the game to bed.
PAOK’s profligacy always left the hosts in with a chance to preserve their proud unbeaten home record against PAOK, which has stood for 19 years (since March 1998), and they did just that thanks to Bastako’s opportunist goal 10 minutes from full time.
The result means PAOK remained in third place with 40 points, just a single point behind second-placed Panionios, who were scheduled to kick-off against Olympiacos at the Georgios Karaiskakis in Sunday’s late match.
A point may prove vital for Iraklis in their battle against the drop, although the struggling side remain in the second relegation spot, two points adrift from safety.
