Bento Bites the Bullet
Paulo Bento has been sacked from his post as coach by Greek giants Olympiacos following a poor string of results, the Super League club announced on Monday.
The 47-year-old Portuguese coach came under intense pressure in the wake of Sunday’s 2-0 loss to PAOK, which saw the reigning champions suffer a third successive league defeat for the first time in 21 years.
“Olympiakos announces the end of its cooperation with Paulo Bento,” said a brief club statement, which added that Under 20 coach Vasilis Vouzas would take over in an interim capacity assisted by Ariel Ibagaza.
Bento was appointed in the summer and despite a successful season so far with the club still seven points clear at the top of the table and in the Greek Cup semi-finals and the Europa League’s last 16, the loss to PAOK prompted club owner Vangelis Marinakis to act.
Before the defeat to PAOK at the Toumba, the Red and Whites also lost important matches against Panionios at home and AEK Athens at the Olympic Stadium.
Vouzas now has a few days to rally his players ahead of the visit of Turkish giants Besiktas in the first leg of their Europa League Round of 16 clash at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in Piraeus on Thursday.
