Big Ben Strikes Again for Panionara
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 24
|Panionios||1 - 0||Larissa|
Panionios’ imperious form continued on Saturday as the SuperLeague title pretenders defeated Larissa 1-0 to move to within three points of leaders Olympiacos.
El Fardou Ben Nabouhane, aka Big Ben, scored the only goal of the game after 33 minutes, but in truth the home side could have scored a lot more had it not been for profligacy in front of goal and some brilliant saves from Larissa goalkeeper Kostas Theodoropoulos.
Chants of “Panionara, omadara” rang around the Nea Smyrni Stadium at the final whistle and the dream is well and truly alive for Vladan Milojevic’s men, who have had an amazing season whatever happens.
Panionios, who have never won the SuperLeague but were runners-up in the 1950–51 and 1970–71 seasons, are now within three points of Olympiacos, who host Atromitos on Sunday.
Larissa, who have endured a miserable season, simply could not live with the quality of the hosts, and their frustrations were epitomised by Adnan Aganovic’s red card in the closing stages.
The Vissini are 12th in the standings, but are only five points clear of the relegation zone with six matches to play.
