Greece defeated the Netherlands 4-10 in the fifth matchday of the World League preliminary round, keeping their hopes alive of progressing to the competition’s Super-Final.
Despite falling behind early in the game, Greece fought back and took a 2-4 lead into halftime. After a dead even third period where each team scored a goal (3-5), Greece ran away with the score as they went on a 0-3 run to start the final period, leading to a 4-10 win in the end. Gounas led Greece with 4 goals while Fountoulis scored twice.
The win keeps Greece second in the standings with 4 wins from 5 matches (12 points) while Croatia, who easily defeated France 16-6, continue to sit first with the same record as our national team (Croatia holds the tiebreaker advantage).
On the final matchday (11-April) Greece will travel to France needing a win while they hope Croatia slips up when they host the Netherlands (very unlikely). Only the group winner will advance to the competition’s Super Final.
