Greece U17 Eliminated After Heavy Defeat to Poland
EURO U17 2017 - ELITE QUALIFYING ROUND (GROUP 3)
|Greece U17||0 - 3||Poland U17|
The Greek U17 National Team was defeated 3-0 by Poland in their final fixture for Euro 2017 qualifying and failed to qualify for the competition.
Greece had high hopes of qualifying for Euro 2017 after a big win against Spain, however things did not go Greece’s way in their final qualifier against Poland. Poland got off to a great start by scoring an early opener when Skoras found the back of the net in the 11th minute. Things got worse for our national team when Praszelik doubled Poland’s lead nine minutes before the break.
The Ethniki Paidon were given a lifeline in the 40th minute when they were awarded a penalty, however Lyratzis, who scored from the spot against Spain, was denied by the goalkeeper.
Nine minutes after the restart, Greece were awarded a second penalty but yet again Poland’s goalkeeper came up with a big save to deny Gargalatzidis. With Greece unable to score, Poland secured the three points with Kiwior’s 64th minute goal, shaping the final score at 3-0.
The loss eliminated Greece from qualifying as they finished last in Group 3 with 3 points from three matches. Despite the win, Poland finished tied on points with Portugal (4 pts) but were eliminated based on goal differential. Spain, who defeated Portugal 0-2 in the other group match, topped the group with 6 points.
