Xanthi’s hopes of reaching the SuperLeague playoffs suffered a setback on Sunday after strugglers Levadiakos refused to crumble under pressure and held on to secure a deserved 2-2 draw.
Xanthi twice went in front but were twice pegged back by their determined visitors, who are fighting or the top flight status, in an entertaining match at the Xanthi Arena.
The draw means Xanthi remain just outside the playoff places in sixth, three points behind fifth-placed Panathinaikos.
Tunisian striker Hamza Younes gave the home side an ideal start by opening the scoring from the penalty spot after just five minutes, but Stelios Vasileiou levelled matters in the 28th minute.
Serbian midfielder Dorde Lavic struck just two minutes later to put Xanthi in the ascendancy again at half-time, but a lapse in concentration at the start of the second half by the home side allowed Toni Silva to score a second equaliser for Levadiakos.
The result saw Levadiakos move three points clear of Iraklis, who occupy the final relegation place in 15th place. Iraklis can move level on 19 points with Levadiakos, however, if they win at Platanias on Monday night.
