Aris, Apollon Pontou, and Doxa Dramas began the Football League season with victories while Sparti/Panegialios and Ergotelis/Kallithea played to draws.
Aris put together a 5-star performance to begin their 2017/18 Greek Football League campaign, defeating Aiginiakos 5-0. The hosts put the game out of reach by the half hour mark as Platellas (18), Pasas (24), and Kassos (31) gave Aris a 3-0 lead. The Thessaloniki side took their foot off the gas in the second half but managed to add two more goals before the final whistle with Kapnidis (74) and Bargan (90+3). The emphatic win is the best possible start to the season for Aris, who began last year’s campaign with a 1-1 draw against Anagennisi Karditsas, and have only one goal this year, promotion to the SuperLeague. Promotion contenders, Apollon Pontou, also began their season with a 0-1 victory over Veria thanks to an 87th minute winner from Kalogeris. Apollon Pontou have put together some convincing displays in the Cup early in this season and despite coming from last year’s Gamma Ethniki, are determined to contest promotion to next year’s Superleague.
Also coming from the Gamma Ethniki, Doxa Dramas defeated Anagennisi Karditsas 2-0 with two goals from Spaniard Cases in either half. Ergotelis and Kallithea played to a goalless draw while Sparti salvaged a point with an 85th minute goal from Ikonomopoulos in a 1-1 draw at home to Panegialios.
