-- 10-Men Xanthi and AEK Finish Goalless --
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 18
|Xanthi||0 - 0||AEK|
Honours ended even in Xanthi on Saturday in the high flying home side’s clash against AEK as the two teams earned a point apiece in a hard-fought SuperLeague Matchday 18 contest which ended goalless. AEK played most of the match with 10-men while Xanthi lost their extra man advantage in the 58th minute.
Recently-appointed AEK boss Manolo Jimenez, now in his second spell in charge of the Kitrinomavri, was looking for a second win in succession since being reappointed as manager of the club, but the visitors were up against it after just six minutes of play when they were reduced to 10 players.
Brazilian defender Rodrigo Galo was the guilty party, pulling down home midfielder Adrian Lucero to prevent a clear scoring chance. Despite their disadvantage, it was AEK who looked the most likely to open the scoring with a determined display in the opening half, with Xanthi failing to trouble AEK keeper Vasilis Barkas.
The hosts came into the game more as the match wore on, however, their momentum was halted two minutes before the hour mark when Xanthi’s Panagiotis Triadis was dismissed after picking up a second booking.
AEK finished the match stronger and almost pinched the three points with four minutes left, but defender Vasilis Lampropoulos headed narrowly over the bar with the goal at his mercy.
The result moves AEK level on 26 points with PAOK, but Jimenez’s side remain in sixth spot, while Xanthi stay in third, level on points with Panionios and 10 adrift of leaders Olympiakos.
