Greece U19 Eliminated With Head Held High
EURO U19 2017 - ELITE QUALIFYING ROUND (GROUP 1)
|Greece U19||0 - 0||Netherlands U19|
The Greek U19 National Team held a strong Netherlands side to a goalless draw in the final matchday of Euro 2017 qualifying, however the result was not enough for Greece to advance to the final tournament.
In the final matchday of the Euro 2017 Elite Qualifying round, Greece knew that only a win would do against the Netherlands (group leaders) to have any hope of qualifying for the final tournament in Georgia.
Despite a close call in the 4th minute of play when Piroe was denied by the woodwork, Greece was the better side in the opening half and created multiple chances to open the score. However, the Dutch goalkeeper Bijlow prevented Pavlidis (two occasions) and Kampetis from finding the back of the net.
In the second half, Holland balanced out the game, looking more of a threat, but the Greek defense kept their ground and held their opponents scoreless. In the 81st minute, the Dutch had a golden chance to steal the victory and seal their place at Euro 2017, however PAOK’s goalkeeper Siampanis came up with a big save to deny Kadioglu from the penalty spot.
Unfortunately the Greek team was unable to find the goal that would send them to the Euro 2017 finals as the match ended in a goalless draw, with Netherlands taking first spot in Group 3 with 7 points while Greece finished second with 4 points. The other group match ended in favor of Greece (if Greece had won) with Finland defeating Ukraine 2-1.
Greece’s opening match defeat to Ukraine proved costly in the end as a better result in that match could have led to the Ethniki Neon to place at Euro 2017.
