EUROBASKET WOMEN - QUARTERFINALS
|Greece||84 - 55||Turkey|
The women’s Greek national basketball team DOMINATED Turkey 84-55 to advance to the semi-finals of the Eurobasket Women for the first time in the team’s history!
The Greek train in the Eurobasket Women tournament shows no signs of slowing down as the girls of Greece emphatically defeated a “strong” Turkish side 84-55 and advanced to the semifinals of the competition for the first time in team history. The result not only sends Greece to the competition’s Final-4, but secures the team’s place in next year’s Women’s World Cup.
The turning point in the game came in the second quarter when Turkey took a 10-point advantage (22-12), but Greece responded with a late push to end the half, going ahead 36-30 into halftime.
The momentum had shifted in Greece’s direction and a 7-0 run to begin the third quarter put Greece ahead by thirteen points 43-30. The Ethniki never looked back as they dominated the “Tourkales” on the court and continued to increase their lead. The advantage grew to thirty points late in the game and the final score 84-55 proved to be a shocking result as Turkey were the favorites on paper before the match.
Maltsi starred for Greece finishing with a double-double 25-points and 10-rebounds. Spanou and Kaltsidou also scored double digit points finishing with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
After the game coach Kostas Keramidas said “We have achieved our goal, we don't know how far we can go. It is the biggest achievement in the history of women's Greek basketball. We have a team spirit and we play great defense.” He went on to say that no one understands what is going on and that Greece continues to shock the world, defeating “world class” opponents.
The Greeks will now await the winner of France/Slovakia in the semi-finals with hopes of continuing their cinderella run to the competition’s final. Regardless of the result, Greece will play for a medal either in the championship or 3rd place game.
