Defending champions APOEL achieved their sixth consecutive win with an emphatic 4:0 scoreline against Anorthosis at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia. Anorthosis will be dissatisfied with the result as they had control of the game especially in the first half, however the hosts with four goals from seven attempts on target grabbed the win.
The visitors started strong and missed their first chance just within three minutes of play. Michal Duris rushed into APOEL’s penalty area, however Boy Waterman was ready and successfully stopped his shot. In the 14th minute after an Anorthosis corner kick, the ball went just inches from Douglao who was unable to head home into an open net. Despite the visitors playing better, it was the hosts that struck first three minutes later. Leo Natel took the free kick and unleashed a rocket that Ivan Vargic had no chance to keep out, putting APOEL in front 1:0. Anorthosis kept looking for a goal and just before half time, Erwin Koffi found himself in a shooting position, however he looked for a pass and the ball ended wide out. APOEL went into halftime with a valuable one goal lead.
Anorthosis kept pushing in the beginning of the second half and in the 56th minute, the visitors created their biggest chance. Beka Mikeltadze received the ball from Kacharava, but his strong shot hit Waterman’s post. After that chance, APOEL started gaining ground and in the 65th minute, Emilio Nsue was brought down by Danijel Pranjic and a penalty was awarded. Skipper Nuno Morais, despite Vargic’s effort, found the back of the net to double APOEL’s lead.
Five minutes later, APOEL scored another goal after a beautiful effort by Natel, which was stopped by Vargic, but Nicholas Ioannou got the rebound to make it 3:0. The game naturally slowed down and the hosts put icing on the cake during stoppage time. Norbert Balogh had an effort and once again Vargic was up to the task, but the ball reached Lucas Souza who scored another rebounded goal for APOEL to form the final 4:0 scoreline.
APOEL were the big winners of the first derby of the weekend and they did so without reaching great levels of gameplay. The “galazokitrinoi” were on target when they had the chance while they managed to hold back the pressure from Anorthosis. APOEL continue to lead the table despite being without their big star Musa Al-Taamari who is currently participating in the Asia Cup with Jordan. Anorthosis played a good game, however, they were unable to find the back of the net or stop APOEL’s attack. The Famagusta side remain fifth in the table, but AEK Larnaka and Omonoia are close by in the battle of staying in the first playoff group.
