-- PAOK Leave the Plateia Empty Handed Again --
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 10
|Panionios||1 - 0||PAOK|
For a third straight season PAOK was defeated in Nea Smyrni after losing today's fixture to Panionios 1-0. The only goal of the game came in the first half through Ansarifard.
The start of the match was played at a fast pace and it did not take long for the first goal to be scored. In the 14th minute, good team play from the hosts left Ansarifard in an easy position to give Panionios the 1-0 lead. PAOK came close to an equalIzer late in the half, but Pereyra’s header was denied by Gianniotas and the ball hit the woodwork and stayed out.
The first chance of the second half fell to Panionios and on the next play, PAOK wasted a great opportunity to pull level when Mystakidis shot was saved by Gianniotas and the rebound fell to Pererya, who could not convert in front of an open net. Like PAOK’s previous outings in the SuperLeague they created chances but were unable to find the back of the net. In the 64th minute, Leo Matos’ header did not find the target and 4 minutes later, Koulouris’ shot was stopped by the crossbar. In the final minutes, Panionios sat back as PAOK looked for the equalizer, however it was not to be and PAOK left Nea Smyrni for a third consecutive season without a point.
Today’s result puts PAOK further behind in this year’s title race as they sit 7 points behind the league leaders Olympiacos, who play Panathinaikos later today. Panionios adds three points to their campaign and return to the top 5 in the standings. Both sides have tricky away fixtures after the break with PAOK playing against Larissa while Panionios travels to Atromitos.
