AEK and PAOK drawn apart in Greek Cup semi-finals
AEK Athens and PAOK Thessaloniki remain on course for a meeting in the Greek Cup final, after the two were drawn against different teams in the semi-finals.
The Enosis will face AEL, while PAOK were given the task of taking on Panionios.
However, it won’t be easy for AEK and PAOK to progress to the showpiece match. AEL recently played against AEK in Larissa in the Super League, holding the Athenian giants to a frustrating 0:0 draw. AEL made the semi-finals in dramatic fashion, requiring extra-time to overcome PAS Giannina 5:3 in the previous round.
Panionios breezed into the semi-finals, thrashing PAS Lamia 1964 5:1 on aggregate. The club based in Nea Smyrni often make life difficult for Greece’s so-called bigger clubs, suggesting that PAOK will have to be at their best if they are to qualify for the final.
In their quarter-final, AEK edged past Olympiacos 2:1 in a pulsating encounter. PAOK calmly negotiated a tricky tie with high-flying Atromitos, earning a 5:1 aggregate win.
