AEK Athens claimed a late 2-0 away victory at Levadiakos to safeguard their place in the SuperLeague playoffs and condemn Levadiakos to relegation from the top flight in the process on a tense evening in Livadeia.
This nailbiting Matchday 29 encounter was deadlocked at 0-0 for 87 minutes until AEK’s Argentine forward Sergio Araujo broke the stalemate to drive a dagger through the hearts of the home fans. If that goal had felt like a cruel blow for the hosts, then home defender Thanasis Moulopoulos hammered the final nail into his team’s relegation coffin by turning the ball into his own net in the fifth minute of added time.
Manolo Jimenez’s AEK moved up to fourth spot and are assured of a place in the playoffs where they will battle for the second Champions League spot and Europa League places along with PAOK, Panathinaikos and Panionios.
