AEK defeated Lamia for the second time in four days, chalking up a 2-0 win in their opening match in the Greek Cup group stages.
Two second half goals from Christodoulopoulos (penalty) and Mantalos were enough for AEK to grab a 2-0 win over Lamia in their opening match of this year’s Greek Cup. It is AEK’s second win over Lamia in four days after the Enosis defeated the Superleague’s newly promoted side over the weekend in league play 0-1.
Lamia were the better side in the first half and came close to finding the opener in the eighth minute, but Fragou’s effort was denied by the crossbar. AEK balanced out the match following the half hour mark and after the restart, the Enosis began to pressure their opponents in their half of the field.
AEK found the breakthrough in the 49th minute when Christodoulopoulos won a penalty and took it upon himself to convert the spot kick to give AEK the 1-0 lead. The game was put out of reach 10 minutes from the end when Mantalos tapped in a rebounded effort, shaping the final 2-0 scoreline.
The win sends AEK to the top of Group 3 as they await tomorrow’s matchup between Apollon Larissas and Kallithea. The Dikefalos will now turn their full attention to Sunday’s derby against Olympiacos at the OAKA stadium where a highly anticipated matchup awaits as AEK sit atop the table, two points ahead of Olympiacos.
