AEK Getting Closer To Scocco Return

AEK are increasingly closer to bringing former star Ignacio Scocco back to the club. The 32-year-old is one the Kitrinomavri’s prime targets this summer as they build a squad capable of qualifying for the Champions’ League and challenging for honors domestically.

This is the third summer in a row that Scocco has been rumored to rejoin AEK. However, the difference being that this year all the ingredients are seemingly in place in order to make the deal happen.

Scocco’s current club, Newell’s Old Boys are in extremely bad financial shape and Scocco’s reported €600,000 per year salary is one of the club’s biggest. Reports state that Newell’s haven’t been able to pay Scocco for the last five months. The Argentine club’s President disclosed this week that while it is Newell’s hope that Scocco stays, it is ultimately up to the player what he decides.

And reports from Argentina suggest that Scocco is interested in a move back to Greece with AEK. The situation is a little more complicated however as Scocco is a fan of the club and would like Newell’s to reap some sort of economic benefit from his departure. What AEK would be willing to pay for a transfer fee is not yet known, but there is a willingness from the Enosi to enter into talks.

With the player interested in speaking to AEK and the Greek side also wanting Scocco, this week could prove pivotal for  both sides to sit and work out a deal.

Manager Manolo Jimenez wants the club’s transfer business done before the team begin preseason training at the end of the month. The main focus for transfers appears to be in attacking positions. A striker and at least one wide attacker are being sought.

With Patito Rodriguez set to leave the club, AEK are looking at buying at least one, if not two, wide players. In recent days, AEK are rumored to have shown interest in two particular wingers, Norkopping’s Nicklas Barkroth and Real Madrid’s Burgui. Barkroth is a 25-year-old who has been capped by Sweden six times. The cost to complete his transfer is rumored to be around a manageable €350,000.

The 23-year-old Burgui has not played for the senior Real side, having turned out for Real Madrid B and Real Madrid C. The youngster has spent the last two seasons on loan, first with Espanyol and most recently this past season with Sporting Gijon.
