AEK hit a wall at Larissa
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 18
|Larissa||0 - 0||AEK|
AEK Athens handed the SuperLeague title initiative to Olympiacos and PAOK on Saturday after they suffered a creativity blackout at Larissa and were held to a goalless draw.
Chances were at a premium at the AEL FC Arena as Manolo Jimenez’s men failed to penetrate a well-organised home defence.
There was not much to speak of in the way of attacking threat from the home side, while AEK’s most notable chance came after 34 minutes when striker Marko Livaja played in Tasos Bakesetas, only for the Greece midfielder’s deflected shot to flash narrowly wide.
The highlight of the night, which was more of a lowlight in reality, was the ejection of Larissa owner Alexis Kougios who launched a verbal assault on the match officials at the half-time whistle. The outspoken celebrity lawyer was sent to the stands for his troubles.
The result means AEK move level on 38 points with leaders Olympiacos, but the Piraeus giants will be expected to move three points clear when they host Xanthi on Monday night.
PAOK can move into top spot on Sunday if they can beat Apollon Smyrnis.
