AEK jump 86 places in UEFA rankings
AEK jumped 86 place in the UEFA Club rankings this season after their run to the Last 32 of the UEFA Europa League.
AEK returned to the European stage in fashion with a great campaign in the UEFA Europa League, coming just a breath away of the Last 16 in the competition. AEK’s journey in Europe began last summer against CSKA Moscow in UEFA Champions League qualifying and concluded against Dynamo Kyiv on Thursday in the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League. Although the Enosis were eliminated after a goalless draw in Kiev, the Greek club finished the UEFA Europa League season without tasting a single defeat (1 win, 7 draws).
AEK’s success in Europe saw the club jump 86 places in UEFA’s Club Ranking, a ranking that determines seeding of teams in future UEFA Champions League and Europa League draws. AEK began the season ranked 206 and ended the year in 122nd position. In the process, the Kitrinomavri surpassed Panathinaikos (currently 157th) and Asteras Tripolis (currently 145th) in the standings and are Greece’s third best ranked side while PAOK (48th) and Olympiacos (27th) are much further ahead.
Next season, AEK will begin in 102nd spot (only results from the previous 5 season are taken into account), which is 106 places higher from where the club began this season. The jump in the rankings will put AEK in a more advantageous position for next year’s draws in European competitions (i.e UCL and UEL).
