Matchday 13 of the Cypriot First Division brought AEK Larnakas solely to the top of the table after Anorthosis played to a draw with AEL. APOEL, Apollon, and Omonoia grabbed wins and are closing in on the leaders while Ermis and Alki recorded important victories in their fight to avoid the drop.
Ermis returned to wins winning ways after three weeks by defeating Aris 0-2 in Limassol. Emeghara and Imerekov scored for the visitors as Ermis climbed into 9th place leaving their opponents four points behind in 12th place.
After conceding six goals to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, APOEL responded with an emphatic 6-1 win over Olympiakos at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia. Ebecilio, Sallai, De Camargo, and Zahid sent the defending champions into halftime with a four goal advantage. Early in the second half, Castro scored Olympiakos’ only goal of the match before Sallai and De Camargo added their second goals of the night giving APOEL the 6-1 victory. The result moves APOEL into 5th with 20 points, nine behind the leaders AEK, however the Galazokitrini have three games in hand.
AEK moved top of the table after a 2-0 home win over Pafos. The visitors did well to hold a clean sheet against the league’s best attacking team, however an early second half mistake from Goulon allowed Taulemesse to score his twelfth goal of the season. The Larnaka side doubled their lead with Larena in the 71st minute and sit alone atop the league standings, two ahead of second placed Anorthosis.
Omonoia came from behind to defeat Doxa 1-2 in a tricky away test. Doxa surprised the visitors and grabbed the lead just four minutes into the game with Luis Carlos, however two goals within three minutes from William Soares (23, 26) turned things around for Omonoia as the Prasini moved into 7th with 19 points.
Alki recorded an important 2-3 win on the road against Nea Salamina. In a busy first half, both goalkeepers made great saves to keep the opposition at bay. However, Fabricio struck twice for Aliki early in the second half to put the visitors ahead 0-2. Alki’s Semedo put the match out of reach deep in the game, before Salamina netted two consolation goals in stoppage time with Kyprianou and Karo.
Apollon had an easy night in Limassol against last placed Ethnikos as the hosts marched on to a 3-0 victory. Apollon took control of the game from kick-off and Alex Da Silva wasted a great chance to put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot, but sent his shot into the stands. Apollon kept their composure in the second half and three goals from Papoulis, Yuste, and Zelaya gave the home side the 3-0 victory. Apollon are 4th in the standings with 22 points.
