The Final Four of the FIBA Champions League will be hosted at the OAKA Olympic Indoor Hall next month after AEK were announced as hosts for the three-day event.
Having clinched a berth in the Final Four with an aggregate defeat of SIG Strasbourg, AEK joined CAM Murcia, AS Monaco, and MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg as the four finalists.
Unlike the EuroLeague which picks a Final Four hosts well in advance of the regular season, FIBA’s preference is to pick a host city from one of the four teams competing for the title.
If AEK weren’t already frontrunners, AEK certainly catapulted to the front of the list after AEK’s home clash with Strasbourg set a competition record for the highest attendance. Not to mention the popularity of the sport in Greece, and the fact that the city of Athens has played hosts to many monumental events involving AEK’s local rivals Olympiacos and Panathinaikos.
"We’re very excited to have Athens host the second Basketball Champions League Final Four. We have witnessed the fervent enthusiasm of the club to organise this historical event and the passionate support of the local community. We are all thrilled to have the opportunity to award this Final Four to such an impressive environment, where the participation of four clubs that are currently ranked in top positions in four of the most competitive leagues guarantees a unique weekend for basketball fans across Europe," said Patrick Comninos, CEO of the Basketball Champions League.
The draw for the semi-final round will take place in Athens on 12 April, while the Final Four is scheduled to take place from 4-6 May, beginning with the two semi-final matchups on 4 May ahead of the consolation final and the Final on 6 May.
