AEK are moving on to the quarterfinals of the FIBA Basketball Champions League after a dramatic night in the Czech Republic on Wednesday night…
Greece will be represented in the quarterfinal round of the FIBA Basketball Champions League following a dramatic turn of events that saw AEK clinch progress over CEZ Nymburk with a 93-82 win in the Czech Republic.
Manny Harris was the standout star for AEK as his 36 points propelled the Athenians to a massive win, which was fuelled by a dominant fourth quarter. The Enosi outscored Nymburk 29-14 in the final frame to ultimately overturn last week’s ten-point loss in Athens.
As if the massive difference in the fourth quarter scoring wasn’t enough, Kevin Punter sealed AEK’s progress with an incredible three-pointer -- from some distance -- with just 2.8 seconds left on the clock.
AEK would need every point in the fourth quarter to ultimately edge Nymburk for a spot in the next round with a 181-180 aggregate seeing AEK scrape past the Czech outfit.
Kendrick Ray led Nymburk’s with 18 points, but the American and his teammates will likely rue their horrible shooting night from the free throw line after making just 9 of their 16 attempts.
Two tight quarters saw AEK struggle to carve the margin of victory needed to progress before Nymburk’s impressive run in the third quarter further compounded problems for AEK.
AEK would manage the unthinkable in the fourth quarter as the dominant +15 run in the final frame not only overturned the score on the nigh but also paved the way for AEK to meet with SIG Strasbourg in the next round.
