AEL 10-0, AEK progress with draw
Both AEL and AEK had an easy time in the first round of Europa League qualifying as they advanced to the second round at the expense of Gibraltar sides St Joseph’s and Lincoln Red Imps, respectively. AEL will face Progres Niederkorn from Luxembourg, who defeated Scottish giants Rangers, while AEK will travel to Ireland to face Cork City, who prevailed over Levadia Tallinn.
AEL had an easy afternoon at the Tsireio stadium thumping St Joseph’s 6-0 to win on aggregate 10-0! Two minutes into the game, Andreas Avraam opened the scoring early on before Marios Elia scored twice before half-time to make it 3-0 for the Limassol side. Goals from Benitez, Mesca, and Kyriacou gave AEL the emphatic win in what seemed like a pre-season friendly rather than a Europa League match. Next up in the second qualifying round will be Niederkorn from Luxembourg, who shocked Scottish giants Rangers in the first qualifying round.
AEK traveled to face Lincoln Red Imps to finish off the job from their 5-0 win in the first leg. The Larnakeis, who did not waste much energy on the pitch, found themselves behind in the score just a few minutes before half-time. In the second half, AEK managed to equalize with Larena’s penalty kick and the game finished in a 1-1 draw with AEK winning 6-1 on aggregate. AEK’s next opponents will surely be more competitive when they face Irish side Cork City.
