AEL play out a stalemate with AEK Larnaca, APOEL thrash Anorthosis
CYPRIOT FIRST DIVISION
|AEL Limassol||0 - 0||AEK Larnaca|
AEL Limassol failed to score for the third consecutive match during a stalemate with Cypriot First Division leaders AEK Larnaca, while reigning champions APOEL Nicosia ripped Anorthosis Famagusta apart on the road.
The day’s action began in Limassol, where AEL hosted AEK. The home team were eager to finally score a goal having drawn the past two fixtures 0:0, however AEK wanted to extend their lead at the top of the table. AEK should have taken the lead in a tense first half, but Florian Taulemesse blazed off target after he had beaten AEL goalkeeper Vozinha to the ball.
Following another guilt edged miss from Taulemesse at the start of the second half, AEL took the initiative. Their best chance fell to Kevin Lefrance, who contrived to shoot wide with the goal gaping. Both teams had decent penalty shouts turned down, but neither side could break the deadlock.

Later in the evening, APOEL Nicosia travelled to Larnaca for a huge game against Anorthosis. The latter came into this game protecting an unbeaten record, but they were blown away by the Cypriot champions.
Amazingly, APOEL struck within the opening 18 seconds. Mickael Pote snuck beyond the Anorthosis defence, calmly slotting past the home goalkeeper. Anorthosis struggled in the first half, but they had a glorious chance to level the score. Araz Abdullayev wriggled free inside the area, before blazing over the crossbar.
That proved to be the game’s key moment. On 58 minutes, the visitors took advantage of a poor Anorthosis error to double their money. Panagiotis Artymatas volleyed the ball away from his netminder with a sloppy clearance, allowing Lorenzo Ebecillo to head into the unguarded net.
Nevertheless, Anorthosis were gifted a perfect opportunity to get back into proceedings as APOEL’s Carlao committed a foul on Demba Camara in the penalty box. Joao Victor failed to score though, sending his weak spot kick into Nauzet Perez’s palms.
Just to compile Anorthosis’ misery, APOEL forward Igor de Camargo thumped a powerful header into the left corner to seal the Nicosia outfit’s convincing 3:0 victory. APOEL are now just two points behind Anorthosis in third place, but they do have two games in hand. AEK Larnaca continue to lead the standings by a slender point.
