An insight into the plans of Giannakopoulos
Dimitris Giannakopoulos released an official statement on how he plans to revolutionize Panathinaikos FC.
It is now common knowledge that Dimitris Giannakopoulos has been in negotiations with Giannis Alafouzos for three months, regarding a takeover of the struggling Panathinaikos FC. As hinted yesterday, Giannakopoulos has released more details on how he plans on revolutionising the sleeping giants. At this stage, it seems talks are progressing well and the takeover appears to be more of a reality rather than a dream.
In a detailed statement written by Giannakopoulos himself, it is evident to see just how much he loves the club and what it means to him. This is already in stark contrast to current owner Alafouzos who is now unwanted by virtually the entire fan base. The 30 years of “time, sweat, effort and money” invested by his family in PAO BC has played a significant role in ensuring the Greens’ have remained as one of the most successful European basketball sides, winning 6 Euroleague titles and having world class players represent the club. If Giannakopoulos can maintain this success on both fronts, his already booming popularity will reach new heights. He has also stated “his love for the Trifili has not blurred his ability to see the lows PAO FC and the amateur section of the Association have fallen into”. It is refreshing to see someone with the club’s best interests at heart can also see this like the fans, is able to act, and hopefully revolutionise the entire Association.
The establishment of the PAO foundation, according to Giannakopoulos, will be vital for the long-term sustainability and viability of Panathinaikos. It will not be a short-term fix. Furthermore, PAO Foundation will ensure the self-financing of all sections of the Association. This goes in line with Giannakopoulos’ belief that Panathinaikos is not like other clubs in the sense of remaining independent, not relying on assistance to “win titles or control debts”. Another notable aspect of this statement which will encourage fans is the fact that Giannakopoulos can see that rival teams are improving, unlike Panathinaikos. He stated “Olympiakos is expanding, and AEK and PAOK have strengthened”.
More information such as strategic planning will be released in due time, most likely in October, but Giannakopoulos has already made it clear that his main intention to is to act as a “guardian” unifying the Association, as opposed to personally taking over in a hostile sense. In the meantime, Alafouzos will remain committed to covering a large part of the debts in order for the PAE to move in a new era. He support the idea of PAO Foundation and also believes it is what is necessary to move in new direction.
