Anorthosis claim key victory against AEL
CYPRIOT FIRST DIVISION - MATCHDAY 26
|AEL Limassol||0 - 1||Anorthosis|
Anorthosis Famagusta claimed an important victory in the Cypriot First Division, defeating AEL Limassol 1:0 on the road to reaffirm their grip on third spot.
The visitors gradually grew into the battle with AEL at the Tsirion Stadium, earning the victory with a clever second half goal from Slovakian forward Michal Duris.
Hosts AEL started the better in Limassol, creating two clear-cut chances within the opening 25 minutes. Manuel Torres somehow failed to score at point blank range, picking up a loose ball and firing into the goalkeeper’s gloves. Kevin Lefrance then had a perfect opportunity, nodding off target when escaping the attentions of the Anorthosis defence.
Nevertheless, as time wore on, Anorthosis warmed into the game. Ruben Rayo came desperately close to breaking the deadlock against the run of play, curling a low goalbound attempt on to the left post. Sekou Cisse should have given Anorthosis the lead on the stroke of half time, slotting wide when clean through.
Eventually, Anorthosis struck on 67 minutes. A beautiful pass found the onrushing Duris, who rounded the goalkeeper before sliding the ball into the gaping net for his fifth goal in three matches. The Famagusta outfit held on to the 1:0 victory, staying in third position of the Cypriot First Division seven points behind leaders APOEL Nicosia and eight ahead of fifth placed AEL.
