Anorthosis reclaimed 3rd place in the Cypriot First Division playoffs after a 2:1 away win over Omonoia.
Omonoia had lost 6 straight matches coming into Sunday’s fixture as they hosted Anorthosis at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia. It was their first match under new interim manager, Jesper Fredberg.
Omonoia came out of the locker rooms strong with Matt Derbyshire creating the first chance of the match, but his effort sailed over the net. In the 12th minute, Anorthosis had a rush of their own that proved successful as they found the opener. A sliding effort from Danijel Pranjic surprised Nikolay Mihaylov, who made the save, but had no hope of controlling the rebound, which was tapped in for an easy goal by Michal Duris.
Omonoia were not discouraged by this and continued to pressure the visitors resulting in the equalizer five minutes later, with an innocent looking header from Derbyshire that eluded Ariel Harush. The hosts would continue to have the majority of the possession, but Anorthosis’ Harush was more alert after the goal, and made a some good saves to keep the match 1:1 at the half.
The crucial moment of the match came in the second half with some controversy. Omonoia’s Rafa Lopes went down in the box, and pleaded for a penalty, but the referee waived play on, and Anorthosis made the most of the resulting counterattack to pull ahead. Ruben Rayos’ through ball found Duris, who cleverly chipped a charging Mihaylov for what would go down as the winning goal in the 62nd minute.
Anorthosis hung on to win 2:1 and remain in 3rd place while Omonoia see their losing streak extended to 7 games and seemed further doomed to finish 6th place.
