APOEL defeated Doxa 0-2 on the road for the first leg of the Cypriot Cup semi-finals while Apollon demolished Anorthosis 6-0 in the Cup’s other semi-finals first leg fixture.
Doxa hosted APOEL in the first leg of the Cypriot Cup semi-finals with the Galazokitrini coming into the match as the clear favorites. The visitors did not play impressively but they did manage to score two goals with David Barral and Inaki Astiz finding the back of the net. Doxa did put on a good performance, however APOEL’s quality could not be matched by the home side and APOEL held onto a 0-2 win. The Nicosia club will now look to finish the job in the second leg at home and claim a place in this year’s final.
In the other semifinal, Apollon demolished Anorthosis 6-0 with half a dozen goals and can already begin their plans for this year’s Cup final. Six different players scored for the hosts including Maglica, Sardinero, Vinicius, Papoulis (penalty), Makrides, and Piech. With the result, Anorthosis threw away their only chance to salvage anything from their catastrophic season. Apollon will now have the ability to rest players in the return leg and focus on their important league fixtures in an effort to catch APOEL in the league standings.
