Known for their superb defensive displays, APOEL managed to frustrate Real Madrid during the first twenty minutes inside a raucous GSP Stadium. However, after Luka Modric broke the deadlock with a thunderbolt from distance, the floodgates opened. In a crazy six minute spell before half time, the Spaniards managed to score a further three times. Karim Benzema calmly beat APOEL goalkeeper Nauzet Perez when clean through, Nacho touched a bouncing ball over the line, and Benzema completed a flowing play for his second.
Unfortunately for the Cypriots, Real Madrid weren’t willing to show any mercy. Inevitably, it was Cristiano Ronaldo who piled on the misery, scoring two excellent goals at the start of the second half. APOEL managed to play out the remaining minutes without conceding anymore, but a 6:0 defeat won’t do any good for the team’s fragile confidence.
APOEL face a daunting trip to London for the final Champions League group match against high flying Tottenham Hotspur. Nevertheless, as a result of Borussia’s defeat today, APOEL still have a slim chance of making the Europa League.
