The Cypriot champions needed to better Borussia Dortmund’s result in order to make the Europa League, but it was always going to be an uphill struggle against a talented, albeit weakened, Tottenham side. The hosts immediately took the initiative at Wembley, coming agonisingly close to an opener when APOEL’s Jesus Rueda made a superb goalline clearance.
However, Tottenham did eventually make their dominance count. Fernando Llorente scored his first goal for the club, twisting neatly inside the area before slotting beyond Nauzet Perez. Son Heung-Min doubled the advantage late in the first half, curling a delicious effort into the left corner.
Early in the second half, APOEL were unlucky to see Praxitelis Vouros’ deflected drive whistle inches wide. Unfortunately for APOEL fans, the bounces all went Tottenham’s way. Georges-Kevin N’Koudou’s compounded APOEL’s misery on 80 minutes, beating the goalkeeper with a powerful attempt that took a large ricochet off an APOEL defender.
As a result of this loss, APOEL finish in last place of Group H with two points and miss out on the Europa League. Tottenham move on to the last 16 in first position.
