APOEL Win 5th Straight Cypriot Title
APOEL defeated their rivals Omonia 1-3 in today’s matchday 9 playoff fixture and mathematically clinched this year’s Cypriot First Division Title.
Another year and another title for the Thrylos of Cyprus, who celebrated their fifth consecutive Cypriot First Division Championship after defeating their rivals Omonia 1-3 on the road. Derbyshire opened the scoring for the hosts in the 9th minute to put Omonia ahead, however Aloneftis equalized in the 37th minute for APOEL.
The tense match took a turn for the worse when APOEL were awarded a penalty in the 51st minute causing an uproar from the home fans, who threw flares onto the pitch, and the referees went into the locker rooms.
After the delay, Soteriou made no mistake from the penalty spot to put APOEL ahead 1-2. The match was put to bed in the second of EIGHTEEN minutes of stoppage time when Vander added APOEL’s third goal of the night, giving the visitors a 1-3 victory.
The win mathematically secured this year’s title for APOEL as they lead second placed AEK Larnaka by six points with just one game remaining in the playoffs.
This year’s title is APOEL’s fifth straight and 26th in club history.
