Apollon Limassol equalized in second half stoppage time to grab a point at home against Lyon in their Europa League group stage opener.
Apollon Limassol got off to a great start in their 2017/18 UEFA Europa League group stage campaign after playing to a 1-1 draw against French giants Lyon. A controversial handball decision put Lyon ahead in the 52nd minute with Depay’s successful spot kick. The scorer came inches away from putting the game out of reach with a stellar free-kick in the 83rd minute, but the Dutch player was denied by Apollon’s keeper, who made a tremendous save to keep his team in the game.
Apollon sent their first warning in the 90th minute with Zelaya’s wasted chance before Sardinero shocked the visitors with an equalizer in the third minute of second half stoppage time. Martinez made the run down the right wing and his cross was met by the Spaniard, who gave his side an important point to start Apollon’s Europa league group stage campaign.
