Apollon Kalamarias and Ergotelis Celebrate Promotion to Football League
Apollon Kalamarias and Ergotelis celebrated promotion to the Greek Football League on Sunday after defeating Asteras Petriti and Thyella Rafinas, respectively.
Apollon Kalamarias defeated Asteras Petriti 3-0 to mathematically secure their place in next year’s Greek Football League, winning Group A of the Gamma Ethniki. The Pontioi finished first ahead of Doxa Dramas and will play in the Football League for the first time in four years. However, Apollon will await the court’s decision regarding their fixture against AO Kardias which was abandoned due to their opponents refusing to play the game. Apollon are expected to receive the three points from that match and officially celebrate their place in the second division.
Ergotelis also celebrated promotion to the Football League by defeating Thyella Rafinas 3-1 in Crete. Nikos Katsikokeris scored a hat-trick for the hosts leading his side to victory. Ergotelis will return to the Football League after a one year absence and last year's relegation from the second division.
Despite their win over AEEK INKA, Ionikos remained in second place in the standings and finished one point behind the Cretans. However, Ionikos will not go down without a fight and have demanded a six point deduction for Ergotelis that was issued to the Cretan club during the Girtzikis administration at EPO, but was never enforced. If their requests are fulfilled, Ionikos will gain promotion and Ergotelis will remain in the Gamma Ethniki.
A reminder that Apollon Larissas and Panachaiki have already secured promotion to the Football League from Groups B and C, respectively.
