Apollon Larissa hold leaders Volos
GREEK FOOTBALL LEAGUE - MATCHDAY 13
|Apollon Larissas||1 - 1||Volos NFC|
|Poletto Costa 69'||Iliopoulos 3'|
Football League leaders Volos NFC had to settle for a point this weekend, as they were held to a 1:1 draw at 10-man Apollon Larissa.
Volos initially took the lead in the first half, but they conceded an equaliser midway through the second frame to drop points against second placed Apollon Larissa. The hosts were then reduced to 10 men with five minutes remaining, however they managed to hold on to the 1:1 draw which keeps them within eight points of 2018/2019 Football League leaders Volos.
The visitors made the perfect start after three minutes. A searching cross from the right wing found the head of the unmarked Konstantinos Iliopoulos, and with the goal at his mercy, the Volos forward struck gold to open the scoring. Moments later, Vasilis Mantzis suddenly found himself clean through for Volos, but he could only direct his attempt directly into the goalkeeper’s grateful grasp.
After 17 minutes, Apollon put together a neat combination play inside the opposing penalty area, but with the net ready to bulge, the Volos goalkeeper pulled off a superb reaction save to keep their advantage intact. With the half approaching its climax, Spanish striker Carles Coto passed up a glorious chance for Volos, slotting wide when completely clear of the Apollon defence.
Apollon equalised in wonderful fashion on 69 minutes. In space on the edge of the box, Brazilian forward Lucas Poletto shaped for a shot, curling an accurate effort beyond the outstretched grasp of the goalkeeper into the left corner. Following that setback, Volos subsequently searched for a response at the other end, and they had one attempt cleared off the line.
Marcolino received his second yellow card for Apollon Larissa with five minutes remaining, but they held out to claim a 1:1 draw against high flying Volos NFC.
