Apollon Smyrni showed that they are not yet ready to give up on SuperLeague survival after earning a vital 2-1 win over in-form Panaitolikos at the Georgios Kamaras Stadium on Monday to move out of the relegation zone.
After a low-key opening to the match, Georgios Paraschos’s side went into the dressing rooms 1-0 ahead thanks to an own goal by the unfortunate Willyan da Silva Barbosa on the stroke of half-time.
That goal give the home side a massive lift and they doubled the lead after 58 minutes when Christos Almpanis found the back of the net.
Panaitolikos, who are a much-improved proposition under Greece legend Traianos Dellas, set up a frantic finish when Jorge Gutierrez scored in the 70th minute, but the visitors could not find an equaliser despite apply late pressure.
That meant that struggling Apollon chalked up what could prove to be a hugely significant victory - only their third of a tough season - which took them up to 14th place level on points with Kerkyra but ahead of the Islanders on goal difference.
Panaitolikos, who came into the match on the back of three successive wins, remain unmoved in 10th place with 29 points from their 24 matches played.
