Araujo gets AEK back to winning ways
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 9
|Panionios||0 - 1||AEK|
Sergio Araujo scored the game’s only goal as AEK Athens finally returning to winning ways with a 1-0 away victory over Panionios in a closely-contested SuperLeague clash in Nea Smyrni.
Panionios goalkeeper Matic Kotnik was a key performer for the home side, keeping AEK at bay with a string of fine saves in both halves before Argentine forward Araujo broke the deadlock with just nine minutes left.
The diminutive striker showed a great turn of pace to latch on to Tasos Bakasetas’ smart through ball and finish with aplomb to spark jubilant scenes on the AEK bench, with Manolo Jimenez's team winning for the first time since a 3-2 Athens derby win over Olympiacos at the Olympic Stadium on September 24.
Panionios struggled to create any clear scoring chances of note as their threat was nullified largely by AEK’s unexpected 5-3-2 formation in this Matchday 9 showdown at the Nea Smyrni stadium.
The win sees AEK move up to second place with 17 points, two points behind surprise leaders Atromitos, while PAOK, who are a further two points back, host Asteras Tripolis at the Toumba on Monday.
