Aris defeat Panachaiki and lead fight for promotion
GREEK FOOTBALL LEAGUE - MATCHDAY 5
|Aris||2 - 1||Panachaiki|
Aris recorded a come from behind victory for a second week running after defeating Panachaiki 2-1 at the Kleanthis Vikelidis stadium on Saturday.
After an impressive victory last weekend over Ergotelis, where Aris came from 2-0 down to defeat the Cretan side, Aris hosted Panachaiki in the weekend’s Football League derby. However, it was Panachaiki who surprised the hosts to take an early lead when Moraitis converted a brilliant counter attack from the Patra side.
Stergidis failed to put the visitors ahead 0-2 shortly after, which was punished by Platellas late in the first half as the former AEK man kept his composure from close range and sent Aris into the break level.
In the second half, Aris pressured their opponents for a winner, which came with 15 minutes remaining. Platellas’ dangerous in-swinging free-kick was met by an unmarked Delizisis to give the hosts the 2-1 victory and three points from Saturday’s derby.
The result keeps Aris’ perfect start to the season after five games and the Thessaloniki club sit in first place in the league standings with 15 points. Trailing the Kitrinovamri are OFI (defeated Kallithea 2-1) with 11 points while Doxa Dramas (play Ergotelis on Sunday) and Panachaiki sit back on 10 points.
